  1. Database Schema

    • notifications table with full CRUD support
    • Indexes for performance optimization
    • Migration: 20251117000000_add_notifications
  2. Notification Service (server/src/services/notificationService.ts)

    • Area-of-interest matching using Haversine distance calculation
    • Automatic notifications for new reports and events
    • Event reminders (24 hours before)
    • Report verification notifications
    • User notification management (get, mark as read, unread count)
    • Automatic cleanup of old notifications (30+ days)

Configuration

Environment Variables (.env)

# Email Notifications (Mailgun)
MAILGUN_API_KEY="dd27be7a81dd7b0980ada31fec9a9bd9-e80d8b76-fd80c63b"
MAILGUN_DOMAIN="sandbox1835a1917b07443f8c1ca858689c42ea.mailgun.org"
FROM_EMAIL="Beach Litter Platform <noreply@sandbox1835a1917b07443f8c1ca858689c42ea.mailgun.org>"
FRONTEND_URL="http://localhost:5173"
TEST_EMAIL="psbailey31@gmail.com"

Mailgun Sandbox Setup

IMPORTANT: Mailgun sandbox domains require recipient authorization:

  1. Go to https://app.mailgun.com/
  2. Navigate to Sending → Domains → Your sandbox domain
  3. Add authorized recipients (e.g., psbailey31@gmail.com)
  4. Recipients must confirm via email
  5. Then emails will be delivered

For production, use a verified custom domain to avoid this restriction.

How to Test

1. Test Notification System

cd server
npx tsx src/scripts/testNotifications.ts

Tests:

  • Email service connection
  • Notification creation
  • Area-of-interest matching
  • Mark as read functionality
  • Event reminders
  • Email delivery

2. Test Email Service

cd server
npx tsx src/scripts/testEmail.ts

Sends test emails to verify Mailgun configuration.

3. Manual Testing

  1. Create a Report:

    • Submit a new litter report
    • Users with matching areas of interest receive notifications
    • Check notification bell in header
    • Check email inbox
  2. Create an Event:

    • Create a new cleanup event
    • Users with matching areas of interest receive notifications
    • Check notification bell in header
    • Check email inbox
  3. View Notifications:

    • Click bell icon in header
    • See list of notifications
    • Click to view related content
    • Verify mark as read functionality

Notification Types

Type Icon Trigger Recipient
new_report 📍 Report created Users with matching area of interest
new_event 🗓️ Event created Users with matching area of interest
event_reminder ⏰ 24 hours before event Registered participants
report_verified ✅ Report verified Report author
report_disputed ⚠️ Report disputed Report author

Email Templates

HTML Template Features

  • Beach Litter Platform branding
  • Professional styling with colors and layout
  • Call-to-action buttons
  • Links to view details
  • Responsive design for mobile
  • Footer with preference management link

Plain Text Fallback

  • Clean formatting
  • All essential information
  • Links included

Performance Considerations

  1. Async Processing: Notifications sent asynchronously to avoid blocking API responses
  2. Batch Processing: Email sending batched for efficiency
  3. Caching: Frontend uses React Query for caching
  4. Database Indexes: Optimized for common queries
  5. Cleanup: Old notifications automatically removed
  6. Polling: Frontend polls every 30 seconds (not real-time WebSocket)

Known Limitations

  1. Sandbox Domain: Requires recipient authorization (use custom domain for production)
  2. Polling: 30-second delay for new notifications (consider WebSocket for real-time)
  3. Email Rate Limits: 300 emails/day on sandbox (upgrade for production)
  4. No Push Notifications: Only in-app and email (could add web push)
  5. No SMS: Only email notifications (could integrate Twilio)

Future Enhancements

  1. Real-time Updates: WebSocket integration for instant notifications
  2. Push Notifications: Web push API for browser notifications
  3. SMS Notifications: Twilio integration for text alerts
  4. Notification Preferences: More granular control (by litter type, severity, etc.)
  5. Digest Emails: Daily/weekly summary emails
  6. Rich Notifications: Include images and maps
  7. Notification History: Archive and search old notifications
  8. Custom Domains: Production email setup with verified domain
